On Thursday, January 18th, 2018, Amazon announced that it had shortlisted 20 cities where they will consider the opening of the second headquarters. 19 of these states are in the US and Toronto is the only Canadian city on the list, but one of the strongest contenders. Contenders from the US are Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, Miami, and Boston. One of the top contenders is Washington DC, which is very near to Amazon’s founder, Jeff Bezos, other famous business, The Washington Post. So what makes Toronto a favorite candidate? It is the fourth largest city in North America and has a population of 7.8 million. Will the ample amount of space and excited residents to welcome Amazon, Toronto might still keep the company’s interest. According to a company that rates the quality of life in cities all around the world, Mercer said that Toronto is ahead of several US cities on the list. Canada offers free healthcare to working professionals, permanent residents, and its citizens. Toronto has an exceptionally well-planned education system and economic reforms. Also, crime rates are really very low. Canada has an unemployment rate of only six percent. In Mercer’s 2017 rankings, Toronto stood 16th, Boston ranked 35th, and New York stood 44th.
